J Mosley-Redman TVU SU President 2008-2010
Greetings to all of you on board this great ship, known as the S.S. TVU.
For all of you who have joined us at TVU since February, let me say welcome to you all.
My name is J Mosley-Redman; the Students’ Union President. Although my song is coming to an end in the next few months, whilst I am still here let’s all have some fun together - like most of you did during Re-Fresher’s.
If you ever want to put on an event in YOUR SU then contact us via our website which is www.tvusu.co.uk or you can contact the Vice President Recreation on su.recreation@tvu.ac.uk and get your event off the ground.
Right let’s get this out of the way now. Happy Tenth Birthday, to YOUR Valley Magazine!
That’s right, the magazine is now on its tenth edition since it was re-launched and re-branded only two years ago. Wow! Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?
Am going to start my update a bit differently so allons-y!
What a crazy start to the year (both 2010 and to the year of TVU) with many changes taking place.
We are losing two campuses as well as people within the Union and within the University; some of whom have been here since before I was a student and some others who have come and gone like many pop acts of the last twenty years….
Of course, for some of you, these last few months here at TVU have been some of the biggest changes that you have ever had to encounter in your life and for others these are the final months of your journey on this ship we like to call the S.S. TVU (I know some of you will have another name but I can’t print that).
The SS TVU (soon to have a new name written on its side) will face many more storms that could sink this ship that has been afloat for only 17 years now (under its current name).
Some of these people have been here at TVU for years and they have been at the centre of some of the storms that have nearly brought an end to this place that some people call home.
Some of these people have left TVU and even the SU itself as well but some still are here and want to continue to bring down TVU from the inside.
On the other side of the coin, there are people here who have been trying their best to make TVU a better place for not only the current students but also for future TVU students.
However, just like in the real world, people will always try and stop the good work of others. You could say it’s because those some people also care about this place, in their own unique way or you could say that these people are sheep and will follow their shepherds wherever they tell them to go.
University is a place where you can challenge the norm and become a wiser person on your own and not through other people. Yes, other people can help you challenge what is ‘normal’, but should you then take what they say as the truth or should you wait to find out the entire facts first and make up your own mind?
When making up your mind should you do so because of personal reasons or in order to try and make a difference for those people around you?
Don’t forget that you must also respect other people’s opinions on different things but you have to have self-respect for yourself before you start showing disrespect to other people and then judging them on their opinions or on their beliefs. You are here to become better people and to become all that you can be.
So, focus on that and leave the childish games to children of this world.
These next few months here at TVU will be your chance to have your say on how SU is run with the elections being all over the place.
All I say is this... listen to what everyone has to say and if there is someone who you think is the right person for that role, then use your vote and vote for them. Don’t let your vote go to waste like so many people do in the real world outside of University.
Your vote is important so make it count.
Right, my song is coming to an end now so I will leave you and wish you all the best for the rest of the year.
Allons-y!
